ROME —
An American was arrested Tuesday after reportedly throwing red paint on a 17th-Century statue of St. Paul in the basilica of St. John Lateran, the Pope’s church as bishop of Rome, police said.
Witnesses said a man dressed as a clergyman threw a bottle filled with red paint at the marble statue near the entrance of the church.
Thomas Siener, 50, was arrested shortly after the incident.
