Tokyo Garbage Fees Based on Size of Trash

TOKYO —
Tokyo residents, among the world’s biggest consumers, will begin paying next year for producing big garbage, the city decided today.
Beginning July, 1991, city garbage collectors will charge separate fees to haul away 42 different items, including $7 for a refrigerator and $4 for a television. The big trash will be picked up twice a month by appointment.
