Lakewood : City Council to Consider Increase in Dog Licenses
Dog owners in Lakewood may have to pay more to license their dogs, especially if an animal is not spayed or neutered.
The City Council will consider an increase in license fees at its July 24 meeting. The yearly fee for spayed or neutered dogs would go up from $8.75 to $10. Owners of dogs that are not spayed or neutered would pay $20, up from $17.50.
Councilman Larry Van Nostran complained that dog owners are discriminated against because they alone help pay the costs of animal control, while cat owners pay nothing.
The city contracts with Long Beach for animal control services. Revenue from dog licenses generated $108,000 for Lakewood this year, but even with the increase in fees, the revenue will not cover the expected $175,000 bill for animal control.
