From Times wire services

Agricultural officials announced today that entomologists have confirmed the discovery of a mated female Medfly in Glassell Park, virtually assuring a new round of malathion spraying for the area.

Medfly Project officials said scientists late Wednesday were able to definitely identify the fly found in Glassell Park as a mated female.

The fly was discovered Tuesday in a nectarine tree on Avenue 35 in an area that was sprayed at least six times during the state’s eradication campaign and was last doused with the controversial pesticide May 12, said Larry Cooper, a Medfly Project spokesman.
