Lee Atwater, chairman of the Republican National Committee who is suffering from a cancerous brain tumor, was back in a Washington hospital today for tests, the RNC said.

Atwater, whose condition was diagnosed as cancer earlier this year, made what a spokesman called a “routine” return to George Washington University Hospital on Wednesday for the tests, including a CAT scan.

The spokesman, B. J. Cooper, could not say what spurred the visit. “All the (progress) reports are still good on him,” he said.

Cooper said Atwater, 39, may be released from the hospital today.

Atwater, who receives physical therapy almost daily at the medical facility on an out-patient basis, has been missed by the GOP, which has increasingly relied on White House operatives to lend political support to Republican gubernatorial and congressional candidates.
