Lithuania Suspends Its Independence

Your editorial “Why the West Roots for Gorbachev” (July 3) on the eve of our American Independence Day celebration is an insult to all the people of the world who cherish freedom and independence.
To praise Gorbachev on his handling of the Lithuanian independence movement is like praising a sodomite who raped his victim, but left no bruises or scars.
Lithuania is an enslaved nation that is being held captive against its will by the Soviet Union. Every Soviet leader since Stalin, including Gorbachev, has participated in this enslavement.
The West may root for Gorbachev, but I doubt if you’ll find much cheering among the 8 million people in the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia who have suffered from Soviet tyranny for the past 50 years.
