Gay rights activists walked onto a stage behind Princess Diana at the start of the 16th International Congress for the Family and charged that the four-day event gave an authoritarian view of family life.

The annual congress opened Thursday in Brighton, 53 miles south of London.

Moments after Diana delivered an opening speech, five gay rights activists--two women and three men--walked onto the stage and delivered protest pamphlets declaring the event was an attack on the rights of homosexuals to be parents.

Police escorted the protesters outside the hall, but they were not charged.

Security had been provided by a private firm, and organizers said they were concerned about the lapse that allowed the activists to walk past the future queen of England.

The princess appeared unperturbed by the incident.
