2 Blacks Die in S. Africa Blasts in Bar, Hotel

A suspected hand-grenade attack killed a black man in Johannesburg on Saturday and injured 10 people just hours after a black hotel waiter died in a bomb blast.

Altogether, three explosions rocked the city, ending a weeklong lull in urban terrorism blamed on white extremists opposed to racial reform.

The first explosion ripped through an alleyway outside a hotel in the western suburb of Florida shortly after midnight Friday, killing the black waiter. The hotel is known as a gathering place for liberal students.

About four hours later, a second blast hit the suburban home of a right-wing activist recently released from police detention after a probe into white terrorist groups. There were no casualties.

A Department of Law and Order official speculated that the bomb at the house of Afrikaner Resistance Movement member Hans Binneman may be “some kind of revenge” by “a group who may in their minds have linked him to the recent police crackdown on right-wing terror.”

The third explosion erupted in a bar at a hotel in the western suburb of Roodepoort, a police spokeswoman said. An eyewitness saw a person rolling an object, believed to be a hand grenade, into the bar, killing a man and injuring 10 people.

White pro-apartheid extremists have claimed responsibility for a recent string of terror attacks to show opposition to reforms by President Frederik W. de Klerk designed to dismantle race laws.

The targets of earlier attacks included government offices, private homes of liberal politicians, a synagogue, the office of the black National Union of Mineworkers, and a bus and taxi terminal in central Johannesburg in which 27 blacks were injured.
