Twins Charged With Running Art Theft Ring
A pair of Beverly Hills twins have been charged with running one of the largest art print theft rings on the West Coast, allegedly stealing works worth more than $100,000 from a half-dozen galleries, authorities said Monday.
Paul and Kevin Doremus, 38, allegedly began their crime spree in mid-1989, stealing prints and sometimes folding and concealing them under their coats, destroying them in the process.
After having some of the prints restored, the boyish-looking pair, always dressed nattily, allegedly tried to sell them through auction houses. The brothers’ alleged scheme unraveled last month and both were charged June 8 with a total of 14 counts of receiving stolen property, grand theft and attempted grand theft. They have pleaded innocent. An arraignment set for Monday in Superior Court was postponed. The two are free on bail.
The two allegedly stole prints from several respected galleries in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
