Michael Johnson beat the season’s top sprinter, Leroy Burrell, in the 200 meters at the Barcelona Invitational track meet Monday night.

Johnson was timed in 20.06 seconds, Burrell in 20.14.

Burrell’s best event is the 100 meters, in which he has the season’s best time, 9.96. Burrell is preparing for a showdown at that distance against two-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis during the Goodwill Games at Seattle.

Lewis, who hasn’t raced Burrell this season, competed only in the long jump Monday night, extending his nine-year winning streak in the event with a leap of 27 feet 11 inches. Robert Emmiyan of the Soviet Union was second at 27-3 3/4.

Lewis and Burrell also helped the Santa Monica Track Club win the 400-meter relay in 37.95 seconds. Cuba was second in 39.10.

With Burrell skipping the 100, Mike Marsh won in 10.17, 0.04 seconds better than runner-up Mark Witherspoon.

Olympic bronze medalist Danny Everett won the 400 meters in 44.78. Andrew Valmon was second in 45.32.

Paul Ereng of Kenya, the Olympic 800-meter champion, won the metric half-mile in 1:43.78.

The slump of British sprinter Linford Christie continued when he was beaten by Nigerian newcomer Oladape Adeniken in an invitational meet at Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The 100-meter loss was the fifth in a two-week period for Christie, the silver medalist at Seoul.

Adeniken led from start to finish and was timed in 10.17 to 10.19 for Christie.
