Bulgaria Disinters, Cremates Founder of Hated Regime
The embalmed body of Georgi Dimitrov, the founder of the Bulgarian Communist state and one of the most graphic symbols of the hated regime, was cremated in Sofia today after being moved from its mausoleum, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
A commission of prominent politicians, scientists and cultural figures had debated since January the question of moving Dimitrov’s body from its resting place of 40 years. The mausoleum had been the site of recent protests.
Dimitrov was once head of the Soviet-dominated Comintern, the international Communist movement, and was also an adviser of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. He took power in Bulgaria in 1946 after King Simeon II was deposed.
