Compton : Council Backs Down on Attempt to Ban Fireworks
Faced with intense pressure from community groups, the Compton City Council backed down from an attempt to ban the sale and use of fireworks.
On a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, the council decided to indefinitely table a proposed ordinance, ostensibly until it could get more information about the safety of fireworks and about whether Los Angeles County would be willing to ban the sale and use in the county areas within the city.
Last week, the council voted unanimously to put the ordinance on the agenda for a final vote. Only Councilman Maxcy D. Filer wanted to vote Tuesday night for a ban. Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore, the other strong supporter of a ban, agreed to postpone the measure.
Representatives of civic service clubs and other nonprofit organizations that finance their activities by selling fireworks each Fourth of July packed the City Council chamber to protest the proposed ban.
