A double-decker bus carrying 58 American teen-agers at Oxford University overturned on a highway today, killing at least one student and seriously injuring 32, police said.

Twenty-four others suffered lesser injuries, they said.

The American students, all about 16 years old, were taking a summer school course at the university’s Magdalen College. None of the victims were immediately identified.

The Oxford Advanced Studies Program in New York organized the summer course for gifted students from all over the United States, its U.S. coordinator said. He said most were about to enter their senior year in high school.

Those seriously hurt were rushed on stretchers to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The 24 others, described as “walking wounded,” were taken to Wycombe General Hospital in nearby High Wycombe.

The British driver of the chartered bus survived the crash but it was not known if he was injured. The accident involved a truck, but no further details were immediately available, Chief Inspector Laurie Fray said.
