Sudden Downpour Kills Youths in Storm Drain

FLINT, Mich. —
Three teen-agers wading through a storm drain drowned when a sudden storm flooded the culvert and pinned them inside. Fire officials said three-quarters of an inch of rain fell in less than 20 minutes when thunderstorms hit lower Michigan on Wednesday.
Battalion Chief John Balser said: “All the rainwater in the area converges in the one culvert. The water pressure pinned them against a steel grate.”
