Marvin Stanley Rabin, former captain of the volunteer Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team, has died at his Canyon Country home. He was 44.

Rabin died Thursday of brain cancer, said his son, Joel Rabin.

A native of Patterson, N.J., Rabin came to California as a teen-ager. He was senior class president of Fairfax High School in 1964.

In 1971, he joined the search and rescue team and was on call 24 hours a day to assist the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in finding lost hikers and downed airplanes in the region extending from Gorman to Tujunga. He served as captain for four years and as treasurer for several other years, said Bruce Nahin, secretary of the team. He stayed active with the group until last fall, when he underwent surgery for a brain tumor.
