The City Council today approved a voluntary water conservation plan designed to cut consumption by at least 10%, rejecting Mayor Tom Bradley’s call for mandatory rationing.

By a 12-1 vote, council members approved the rationing ordinance proposed by Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores as an alternative to Bradley’s plan.

A provision of Flores’ proposal blocks mandatory rationing as long as residents and businesses citywide continue to keep water consumption down by at least 10% from the normal expected level of use.

During April, May and June, the three months since Bradley first warned that rationing might be necessary to cope with the fourth year of drought, the average conservation effort has resulted in a saving of 13.5%.
