O.C. Golfers in Contention at U.S. Junior

Scott Richardson and Tiger Woods were within striking distance of the leaders Tuesday after the first round of qualifying at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships in Daly City, Calif.

Richardson, of Laguna Niguel and Dana Hills High School, shot four-over-par 76, putting him in a group of four players one shot behind co-leaders Brian Waggoner of Old Hickory, Tenn., and Steve Burdick of Rocklin, Calif.

Woods, a Cypress resident who will attend Western High School in the fall, was two shots back in a group of six players at 77.

The event continues today at the Lake Merced Golf and Country Club with another round of stroke play before the field of 156 is trimmed to the low 64 for match play. Match play will run from Thursday through Saturday.
