House Panel Votes Big Troop Cut
House Armed Services subcommittees on Thursday approved a cut of 129,500 in military personnel and authorized only one of two Seawolf attack submarines that President Bush had sought in his defense budget, lawmakers said.
The panel on military personnel and compensation agreed to reduce the Army by 68,500 troops, the Navy by 20,000, the Air Force by 37,000 and the Marine Corps by 4,000.
The reduction from the present strength of nearly 2.1 million troops is slightly higher than the 100,000 approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee in its version of the defense bill and about 3 1/2 times the total of 38,000 in the President’s proposed budget for the 1991 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
The panel on sea power and strategic and critical materials, meanwhile, approved one SSN-21 Seawolf attack submarine. The Navy had planned to buy two at a total cost of $2.3 billion.
