Pacific Bell Technicians Stage Wildcat Strike

Angered by what they described as a wave of unjust suspensions ordered by a supervisor, 125 Pacific Bell service technicians in Culver City, Beverly Hills and other Westside offices staged an unsanctioned wildcat strike Friday.

Officials of Local 9000 of the Communications Workers of America, who had met Thursday with Pacific Bell representatives to discuss the workers’ complaints, said the walkout caught them by surprise. However, “we knew things were getting bad,” one official said.

The strike affected eight Pacific Bell garages that dispatch workers to install telephone lines and make repairs. A phone company spokeswoman said the effect of the walkout was “minimal” because supervisors filled in.

Union officials said the strikers told them the protest was aimed at a supervisor who workers said had suspended a disproportionate number of employees. The Pacific Bell spokeswoman declined to comment on allegations involving personnel matters.
