Single Parents Honored in Huntington Beach

Twenty-eight low-income, single parents were honored by Huntington Beach at the second annual Project Self-Sufficiency Recognition Program after completing job training courses or holding down the same job for six months.

Certificates of merit were presented to Vicki Agee, Yvonne Anderson, Robin Ashbaugh, Ann Clemens, Collette Gardner, Paris Palmer, Linda Satler, Nancy Stevens, Sandra Tollison, Margaret Wilcox, Cheryl Yrigoyen, Sylvia Brady, Cheryl Castro, Yolanda Clark, Pam Day, Debbie Dominic, Virginia Harris, Dianne Hunt, Leigh Hurst, Beverly McKinney, Brenda Roger, Phonda Banks, Carol Flood, Connie Halcomb, Theresa Kovach, Liz Martin, Lori McGovern and Michelle Cooper.

Project Self-Sufficiency is administered by the city, which helps single women with children find housing, set career goals and develop self-reliance.

Fullerton College business education student Keith Myslicki of Fullerton won second place in an accounting division of an on-the-spot competition with college students from throughout the nation at the recent national leadership conference of Phi Beta Lambda fraternity in Washington.

Fullerton student Nadav Kalai of Buena Park was awarded third place in another accounting category. A total of 1,700 students representing 600 community and four-year schools attended the four-day conference.

Irvine resident Jeannette Flypaa, 16, is pictured in the August issue of ‘TEEN Magazine as a Sportsgirl of the Year regional semifinalist and becomes eligible to compete for a $10,000 scholarship.

In part because of Jeannette’s tennis skills, she was one of 24 finalists selected on the basis of skill in sports, demonstrated leadership and good sportsmanship.

There were 11,000 entries in the magazine’s competition.

La Palma resident Jack L. Evans has been elected vice president of the 171,000-member Optimist International based in St. Louis. The organization has 4,100 Optimist clubs in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. He is a member of the Cerritos Club.

Nicholas Thompson of El Modena High and Leslie Merchant of Foothill High School were awarded $1,500 grants by the Efren Herrera/Mexican-American Bar Assn. Scholarship Foundation, based on their top grade-point averages.

The scholarships were part of $52,500 awarded by the association, which raised the money at a recent celebrity golf tournament, according to Superior Court Judge Manuel A. Ramirez, scholarship committee chairman.

Other major awards were given to Rudy Torres of Santa Ana High and Karen Holliday of Mater Dei High. Each received $1,250 grants.

Tustin resident Melinda Morgan has been appointed to the newly formed corporate advisory board of the Orange County unit of the American Cancer Society. The group was formed to bring society programs to the corporate community.

As a board member, Morgan will advise the society on corporate relations and recruit volunteers at the corporate level for involvement in the unit.

Morgan is vice president of public relations at the Santa Ana-based advertising and public relations firm, Greg Smith & Partners.
