Put on your swimsuit and slap on the sunscreen, because if you do not have your summer tan yet, now is the perfect time to start. Sea Festival, the latest of Long Beach’s annual “waterfests,” will be celebrated from Friday through Aug. 12.

This year’s festival will begin with a junior volleyball tournament at the foot of Belmont Pier, Ocean Boulevard and 39th Place, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday. The tournament will feature top high school players, 18 and younger, in both boys’ doubles and girls’ doubles classifications. A men’s tournament will be held at Junipero Beach, at the base of Junipero Avenue, on Saturday and Aug. 5. The women’s tournament will be Aug. 11 and 12.

Water sport enthusiasts are expected for the Jet Ski National Competition held at Marine Stadium, 5255 Appian Way, beginning 8 a.m. Saturday and Aug. 5. Competition will include freestyle, closed-course and slalom contests. The Prindle California State Championship Regatta will feature close to 80 catamarans departing from Belmont Shore, Granada Ramp, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Aug. 5.

Celebrating its silver anniversary, the sand sculpture contest will attract sand artists and spectators. The contest will be held on the beach at the foot of Junipero Avenue and Ocean Boulevard starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 5, with the judging to be held at 1:30 p.m. The sand sculpture in the photo above was one of last year’s creations. If you haven’t guessed, it is Garfield the cat with a mouthful of fish.

Other events featured in Sea Festival ’90 include an Over the Line tournament, Saturday and Aug. 5; model boat regatta, Aug. 8; 3-on-3 basketball tournament Aug. 11 and 12; novice swim meet, Aug. 11; Catalina ski race, Aug. 12, and sailboat regatta, Aug. 12.
