FIGHTING WORDS
Immersion in a language and being compromised into learning and using it are the best possible teachers of a language. Those who advocate bilingual schoolrooms and simultaneous translations in Spanish of government pamphlets, driving tests and ballots, while well-intentioned, are retarding the learning of English and full participation of recent immigrants in our society. There are, unfortunately, vested interests who profit from such a circumstance. After all, those who understand Spanish only are at the mercy of those who speak it and insulated from those who do not.
