Farm Trade Talks Begin: The European Community and United States dug in their heels in their farm trade reform row as agriculture ministers gathered for two days of closed-door talks at Dromoland Castle near the coast of western Ireland. Australia, Canada and Japan were also represented. Arriving at the castle gates, the ministers were greeted by a large sign saying, “No GATT Sellout,” referring to world trade talks under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Irish farmers were expected to mount a demonstration today to protest U.S.-led efforts to curb farm subsidies. The EC opposes deep cuts in farm subsidies. Canada and Australia support the U.S. stance. Tokyo is fighting to keep its rice market closed to foreign imports.
