Ralph Nader Sends 11-Page Letter to Stempel: The consumer advocate, who took on General Motors Corp. and its Corvair 25 years ago, sent the letter to incoming GM Chairman Robert Stempel, outlining how the auto maker can “correct some of Roger Smith’s mistakes.” Smith steps down today as chairman of GM, a post he held for 9 1/2 years. He’ll be succeeded by GM President Stempel. There’s an opportunity for breaking with the past that Stempel shouldn’t pass up, said Nader. In the GM letter, Nader discussed 13 recommendations, including safety, quality, corporate democracy and recycling.
