Bush ‘Supportive,’ Latvia Leaders Say
Latvian leaders seeking independence from Moscow said they received encouragement in a meeting with President Bush on Monday, but the White House said no commitments were made.
Foreign Minister Janis Jurkns said he and Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis asked Bush to take “concrete steps” as some European countries have toward diplomatic recognition of the government in Riga.
“We got supportive answers,” Jurkns said.
Deputy White House Press Secretary Stephen Hart, however, said, “I’m not aware of any commitments that were made.”
Godmanis said Latvia will seek its independence “democratically, peacefully and gradually.”
