12 Firefighters Plucked From Sea as Boat Hits Reef

A dozen Anaheim firefighters were pulled from the ocean off Santa Catalina Island on Monday afternoon when a 67-foot schooner ran aground on a hidden reef during a race from Long Beach, the Coast Guard said.

The Diosa del Mar was sailing in an annual firefighters’ race with scores of other craft when it struck the reef at 2:45 p.m. and partially sank on Ship Rock about a mile offshore, forcing those aboard into the ocean.

The Coast Guard cutter Point Evans, which was in the area on routine patrol, arrived within minutes of the accident, took the passengers aboard and put them ashore at Isthmus Cove on the island, a spokesman said.
