Aerospace giant Pratt & Whitney, facing leaner U.S defense budgets, will eliminate 4,000 jobs by 1993, mostly in Connecticut and Florida, the company announced today.

The company plans to eliminate about 2,000 jobs from its Connecticut, Maine and Georgia operations, which have a combined staff of about 28,300, said Curtis Linke, Pratt & Whitney’s vice president of communications. Most of the jobs are in Connecticut, which has a total work force of about 25,400.

Another 2,000 jobs will be cut from Pratt & Whitney’s Florida work force, which now stands at 8,400.

The reductions will be accomplished primarily through attrition, but the jet-engine maker has not ruled out the possibility of some layoffs, Linke said. Pratt & Whitney has a worldwide work force of about 45,000.
