Local News in Brief : Ex-Candidates Ordered to Pay Campaign Bills

Share

A Glendale judge has ruled that two former City Council candidates must pay $204 each for bills they incurred during the 1989 elections but never paid.

Municipal Commissioner Daniel Calabro on Friday issued a summary judgment against Robin Westmiller and Shirley Yap Griffin, who were sued by the city last September over unpaid printing bills.

The city contended that Westmiller and Griffin each still owed $204 for candidate statements in a pamphlet distributed to voters. Each of them paid $400 at the time the pamphlet was published.

But they have refused to pay the remaining amount, arguing that the city’s failure to put the printing through a standard bidding process resulted in the excess costs, said Kenneth G. Griffin, a Los Angeles attorney and husband of the former candidate.

The attorney said Westmiller and Griffin will appeal Calabro’s decision.
