Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was hospitalized for observation Friday after a fall the day before in Chicago, a court spokeswoman said.

Marshall, 82, was admitted to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he was listed in stable condition, Toni House said.

She said Marshall, who was in Chicago to speak at the annual convention of the American Bar Assn., stumbled in the lobby of his hotel Thursday evening.

Marshall returned to Washington on Friday “because he prefers consulting with physicians he knows,” said House, who added that it did not appear he had broken any bones in the fall.

She said Marshall does not plan to return to Chicago, where he was scheduled Monday night to address a dinner of the ABA’s Judicial Administration Division.

Marshall, a staunch liberal on the court, has had several health problems in recent years. He had a heart attack in 1976 and has suffered bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis. He was also treated at the National Naval Medical Center in 1987 for a blood clot in his right foot.
