The army is stepping up its distribution of gas masks to civilians in the wake of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, Israeli media reported Sunday.

An army spokesman confirmed that soldiers have been distributing protective equipment against a possible chemical weapons attack but denied that the move is linked to the invasion.

In April, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein threatened to “scorch half of Israel with poison gas” if his country were attacked. The Israeli military began an experimental distribution of gas masks shortly after Hussein’s threat.
