3-D Systems Records $129,163 Quarterly Profit

3-D Systems Inc., a Canadian company whose primary unit is a Valencia operation with the same name, reported a second-quarter profit of $129,163, compared with a loss of $969,262 a year earlier.

3-D makes a machine that uses chemicals, a laser and a computer to rapidly build models of parts, consumer packages and other items that are used as prototypes by manufacturers. The company only recently began full-scale shipments of its machines, which has improved its sales and earnings.

In the quarter that ended June 30, 3-D’s sales jumped to $7.07 million from $3.73 million a year earlier. For the first half of this year, the company earned $529,784 on sales of $14.3 million. In the first six months of 1989, 3-D lost $2.74 million on sales of $5.31 million.
