WORLD : Bhutto May Face Judicial Inquiry
The new prime minister, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, accused ousted leader Benazir Bhutto today of presiding over the worst corruption in the nation’s history and said she will face a judicial inquiry.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since Bhutto was fired Monday and he was installed as caretaker prime minister pending elections, Jatoi said the nation demanded justice.
“It would be unfair to allow those who looted and plundered the economy of this nation to go scot-free,” he told a news conference at the National Assembly.
He said “accountability” would be arrived at through a judicial-type inquiry. “We will not only see that justice is done but that justice is seen to be done,” he added.
Jatoi said disqualification from elections was one possible punishment for those found guilty.
His government, due to hold office until elections set for Oct. 24, has been widely expected to try to exclude Bhutto and her allies from running for office.
