Mercury General Corp: The Los Angeles-based auto insurer’s second-quarter income totaled $12.3 million, in contrast with a loss of $691,000 in the 1989 quarter, when the company recorded an $11.3-million provision for potential rate refunds under Proposition 103. Premiums earned in the second quarter increased 3% to $119.7 million. The company also said underwriting results in the quarter were sharply improved over the year-earlier period. Assets totaled $705.3 million as of June 30.
