WHAT NEXT? Sources said late Wednesday that elements of the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Division were leaving for the Middle East, if they have not already left. . . . That would seem to contradict assurances from Gen. Alfred M. Gray (above), commandant of the Marine Corps, who said earlier in the day that there were no immediate plans to dispatch local Marines to Saudi Arabia. Gray was at Camp Pendleton for a change-of-command ceremony but tried to duck the question. He is due in Orange County today to inspect local bases, an annual chore.
