Surf ‘s Up at Summer Wave-Riding Schools

The following are some of the established programs for teaching surfing in North County:

KAHUNA BOB’S SURF SCHOOL

What: Surf lessons for all ages.

Calls: 943-7009.

When: By appointment, lessons offered year-round, daily during the summer at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Where: At Beacons in Encinitas, below the corner of Neptune Avenue and Leucadia Boulevard.

Cost: $20 for one two-hour semi-private lesson.

Notes: Classes are limited to 10 students; each instructor has no more than 4 students.

The school is in its fifth year. Softboards and wet suits are provided for each student. Instructor “Kahuna” Bob Edwards has 25 years’ experience and is Red Cross-certified in Basic Water Safety and CPR.

PURE JUICE SURF CAMP

Magdalena Ecke YMCA, 200 Saxony Road, Encinitas.

What: Surf lessons for ages 9-15. Beginning surfers or those who wish to improve their surfing or bodyboarding.

When: Weeklong sessions offered until Aug. 31.

Cost: One-week sessions are $75 for YMCA members and $85 for non-members. Two-week sessions are $130 for members and $145 for non-members.

Notes: The camp has been in operation for more than 12 years and provides loaner boards and wet suits. Teacher-student ratio is at least 1-8, and campers are taught ocean sports, oceanography, water and beach safety, and life-saving skills.

OCEANSIDE AQUATICS CAMP

Oceanside Parks and Recreation Department.

What: Surf lessons for ages 8-17 in beginning, novice, intermediate and advanced groups.

When: Two-week sessions, Monday through Friday, until Aug. 31.

Cost: $110.

Notes: The center provides up-to-date equipment including surfboards, softboards and bodyboards. Ratio of counselor to camper is at least 1-10. The Aquatics Camp is at 122 N. Strand, just south of the pier.
