We were wrapping up our interview with producer Jane Moxey about the California Youth Theatre presentation when we had the gnawing feeling that the most obvious question had not been asked. But Moxey came to our rescue. By the way, she said, “Rik Carter is doing the nose.” Of course. The Nose. This was, after all, a production of “Cyrano de Bergerac,” the 17th-Century French author and soldier renowned for his skills at sword fighting, affairs of the heart, and, let’s be upfront about it, his big honker . “There will be a fresh nose for each performance,” Moxey explained. Carter, who’s donating his services, is an alumni of the youth theater who works as a studio special effects makeup man. And Moxey, for all her modesty about being “just a Malibu mom,” clearly has a passionate understanding of the magic of theater. Learning all the aspects of stage craft, she said, can be a wonderful opportunity for young people. The youth theater is based on the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, where Moxey said such apprenticeship theater programs are widespread. It’s something she would like to see here. “Like Little League baseball,” she said. The play will be presented through Sept. 7 at the John Anson Ford Theater, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood. Tickets are $10, $5 for students and senior citizens. For times and information call (213) 957-1054.
