Australia Appoints New Leader of Victoria State

MELBOURNE, Australia —
Joan Kirner took over as prime minister of the Australian state of Victoria on Thursday, becoming only the second woman to hold such a post in Australian history.
“I’m very nervous . . . it’s an awesome responsibility, but I’m also very honored,” Kirner told reporters.
A series of largely unresolved financial crises and union unrest in Victoria, Australia’s manufacturing heartland, toppled Prime Minister John Cain.
