Blue Over ‘Mo’ Better’

I like diversity, intelligence mixed with the avant garde and the cutting edge. But, hey, I live in Orange County and when it comes to films apart from the mainstream, maybe, if I’m lucky, one of the two offbeat theaters in the county might be showing something I want to see.

After accepting the fact that many European and “no-name” films run only in L.A., I’ve remained calm. But after flipping through last Sunday’s Calendar and seeing the ad for Spike Lee’s “Mo’ Better Blues,” I lost it.

Only one theater in all of Orange County was showing it.

“Two thumbs up,” “A 10 plus” and “the first great film of the ‘90s” graced the ad for a film by a talent who at first was far from the mainstream but now is a commercial success and, even in “suburbia USA,” should be well known.

You can have five Performing Arts Centers, a hundred art galleries and millions in cultural funds, but if you ain’t got it, you ain’t got it. Sorry, Orange County, L.A. is “mo’ better” than you.
