Film at 11 . . . but Rarely Any Golf

I have been following the controversy revolving around Shoal Creek and the PGA Championship. Today I read about Louis Willie, the first black to receive an honorary membership to the club. Maybe I don’t understand the whole issue, but I’m appalled. With all due respect to Mr. Willie, he’s 66 and hasn’t golfed in 25 years. I suspect he won’t be making too many appearances at the country club.

I am proud of the corporations who refused to sponsor the tournament and thereby have their names associated with it. I will be doing my small part by not watching the tournament on television. This, after all, is the 20th Century in one of the (arguably) most advanced societies in the world. There is no place for racism in it.
