A former Socialist Cabinet minister found guilty of attempting to defraud the European Community was sentenced by a special court Saturday to 3 1/2 years in prison.

Five officials tried with him also received prison sentences.

Ikos Athanassopnoulos, who was alternate finance minister in the Cabinet of former Socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, was found guilty of covering up the sale of Yugoslav corn to the European Community by a state trading company, passing it off as Greek.

The case was the first to be handled by a special court set up last year to try former ministers of Papandreou’s government accused of involvement in several scandals.
