Turner Broadcasting System Inc. said it lost $44 million on the Goodwill Games, including makeup advertising on the TBS Superstation, which did not get the ratings on the games it had promised sponsors. The games caused the company to lose $8.3 million in the second quarter.
The first Goodwill Games, in 1986, lost $26 million.
TBS chairman Ted Turner said earlier this month he expected the board of directors to decide by the end of September whether to continue TBS’ involvement in the Goodwill Games.
