Long Beach : Rebate Offer for Low-Flow Toilets Catches Council Eye
Among the matters on the agenda of the Long Beach City Council Tuesday was an item in the minutes of the city’s Board of Water Commissioners concerning toilets.
In its constant search for ways to conserve water, the commission had hit upon an idea. “In analyzing the various projects that could be initiated in Long Beach, it appears that a residential toilet rebate program could be feasible and effective,” the minutes read.
The program would be patterned after a similar program in Santa Monica that promotes the installation of “ultra low-flow toilet fixtures”--toilets that don’t use much water--by giving each family that installs the toilets a $100 rebate.
Commissioners unanimously decided to work out a similar program for Long Beach. City Council members were flush about the idea, too. “People might say the rebate doesn’t pay for the investment in the toilet,” said Douglas Drummond, 3rd District councilman. “But gosh! We’re wasting water and this can be a step in the right direction.” Drummond said that the rebate reminded him of similar incentives to by electric refrigerators years ago.
