Compton : Plan for Low-Cost Housing on Old Dump Site Rejected

Share

A nonprofit community group that wanted to build housing on the old Alondra Boulevard dump site has been turned down by the Compton City Council.

The council told the South Central Organizing Committee, which wants to build low-cost, owner-occupied townhouses, that a residential use is not appropriate for the dump site because of the high cost of cleaning up toxins believed to have seeped into the earth.

It is the second time the council has turned thumbs down on a site considered by the nonprofit group. The first site was the Compton Auto Plaza, but the city said it would not allow housing on what it considered valuable commercial land.

Representatives of the SCOC said they would continue to negotiate with the city in order to find an appropriate housing site.
