“Column Left” and “Column Right,” with such opposites as Jesse Jackson and Patrick Buchanan (Commentary, Aug. 2), may make emotions rise, but reason falls. What we need in these troubled times are more voices that bring us together than divide.

Inherent in America’s democracy is the fulfillment of self-interests by consensus as to what best serves all interests.

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land” is inscribed on the Liberty Bell. But because it’s cracked, it cannot ring, nor be heard. What we need to hear is a chorus of voices from we, the people, rising in harmony, and working together to build the promised land.
