Three people were wounded by gunfire, one critically, in Encinitas on Wednesday afternoon after an argument between a man and his former girlfriend, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jeff Hilner, 26, was in critical condition with two wounds in his upper body, and David Long, 34, was in serious condition with a single wound in his upper body after being taken by Life Flight helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Tristin Long, 4, was undergoing surgery on his right leg at Children’s Hospital in San Diego for a single gunshot wound that also penetrated his father. The child’s condition did not appear to be life-threatening, hospital spokesman Mark Morelli said.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Roy Stamper said deputies arrested Wayne Shepard, 41, shortly after the shootings, and that he was taken to County Jail at Vista.

Stamper said Hilner, David Long and Tristin Long were found lying in the street in front of a house at 816 Passiflora Ave. in Encinitas when deputies answered a call.

Stamper said the shootings took place during an argument between Hilner, who does not live at the address, and his ex-girlfriend, Sherrie Dale, a resident at the house. Shepard, whose relationship to the others was not clear Wednesday night, picked up a weapon and fired it three times, Stamper said.
