GE to Cut 1,500 Jobs at Engine Plants: General Electric’s aircraft engines division, predicting a sharp decline in Defense Department contracts, will eliminate 1,500 jobs at plants in Massachusetts and Ohio by 1992, company spokesmen said. A combined 500 employees are expected to be laid off, while another 1,000 positions will be dropped as they are vacated. One of the major subcontracts of the company’s plant in Lynn, Ohio, the government’s P-7 anti-submarine plane, was recently lost.
