Spiegel Awaits Word on Restrictions

Former Columbia Savings & Loan executive Thomas Spiegel should learn more on Monday about what financial restrictions he will be under while awaiting a hearing on charges that he wasted the thrift’s money.
Spiegel’s lawyers and thrift regulators will meet then with U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson to work out a solution to the continuing legal dispute, Dennis M. Perluss, one of Spiegel’s lawyers, said Friday.
Officials with the federal Office of Thrift Supervision want Spiegel to put $19 million into escrow to cover money that they maintain he squandered, plus an additional $2 million for potential losses on condominiums Columbia is trying to sell.
