Bradley Orders All City Departments to Save Fuel

Mayor Tom Bradley on Friday ordered all departments in the city of Los Angeles to begin saving gasoline and diesel fuel to offset an increase in prices.

“Each department is expected to reduce their consumption and each employee is asked to join with us and shift to ride-sharing or public transit,” Bradley told a meeting of his top managers. The city’s cost of fuel oils has risen 30 cents per gallon, to $1.08, in the past year, and if a further increase of 20 cents occurs it could cost $3 million during the next two months, officials said.

At the Police Department, officers were told to save gas by turning off engines when writing tickets and doing other duties, Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker said.

Last year, the city bought 13.1 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel for its vehicles.
