Oxnard Needs Another Name

Crisis it need not be, but it is incredible that Tom Conway’s 5,400 invitations to our more sophisticated south shore neighbors, Bel-Air, Beverly Hills, etc., offering free lunch, and, I would presume, a Harbor cruise to evaluate the Channel Islands area of Oxnard drew no responses whatsoever.
Snobbery, perhaps, but I can’t believe it! Both Conway and Millie Norman of the Convention and Visitors Bureau agree that Oxnard is “not viewed as a beach resort city.” Really!
My first reaction to this unfavorable impression of Oxnard was that the city is “dragging its own anchor” with a name that is utterly non-reflective of its true beauty and character, its beautiful seaside setting, providing the finest facilities to be found anywhere. Its harbor and boating area is nonpareil!
Sad to relate, even the indigenous residents of the area feel the name of Oxnard is anathema.
In view of this, I would therefore respectfully suggest to the city administration that a special referendum be held for the purpose of changing the name of the area to one that is more indicative of its natural beauty, romantic atmosphere and great advantages--to Mandalay of California or Mandalay Beach of California.
We belong up there with the best, so let’s put our best foot forward.
