In the “HBO Showcase” production “Women & Men: Stories of Seduction, six actors team with veteran directors in three short stories.

In Mary McCarthy’s “The Man in the Brooks Brother Shirt,” directed by Frederic Raphael, Elizabeth McGovern plays an engaged New York sophisticate who has a passionate one-night stand with Beau Bridges, a salesman, on a cross-country train.

“Dusk Before Fireworks,” adapted from Dorothy Parker’s short story, stars Molly Ringwald as a woman hopelessly in love with Peter Weller, a handsome but caddish gigolo. Ken Russell directs.

In Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” adapted by Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne and directed by Tony Richardson, Melanie Griffith and James Woods portray lovers discussing the possibility of an abortion and its irreversible effect on their relationship.
